Astragalus

Astragalus is a thorny perennial shrub native to the Middle East and eastern Asia. It is now grown in Mongolia, China, Japan, and Korea. The Chinese name means "yellow leader," referring to both the color of the root and its elevated status as one of the most important health-restoring herbs. The root is usually harvested from four- to seven- year-old plants. Growing conditions and the timing of the harvest affect the concentration of active ingredients. Astragalus flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, Moths, & Butterflies.
