Arnica Flowers

Arnica is a perennial plant that is generally found in mountainous areas of Canada, the northern U.S., and Europe. The horizontal, dark brown, branched rootstock sends up a slightly hairy, simple or lightly branched stem that reaches a height of 1 to 2 ft. The basal leaves are oblong-ovate and short-petioled; the upper leaves are smaller and sessile. Each plant has one to nine large, yellow, daisy-like flowerheads whose rays are notched on the outer tips. Arnica flowers appear from June to August.

Properties/Uses - Arnica is primarily for external use. When it is used in a tincture or salve, it helps to promote the healing of wounds, bruises, and irritation. Arnica is also used as a poultice. Arnica is mainly used for inflammation and pain of bumps, bruises and sprains. It stimulates white blood cell activity which breaks down congested blood by dispersing trapped fluids. It seems the arnica salves are the most popular way of administering the herb to bruised areas. Arnica mollis may also be used.
