Black Cohosh

Black cohosh can grow upwards of eight feet and bears wispy white flowers; however, it is only the gnarly root itself that harbors its potent medicinal properties. The plant produces a stout, blackish rhizome (creeping underground stem), cylindrical, hard and knotty, bearing the remains of numerous stout ascending branches. It is collected in the autumn after the fruit is formed and the leaves have died down, then cut into pieces and dried. It has only a faint, disagreeable odour, but a bitter and acrid taste.

Properties/Uses - Black Cohosh root is noted for its ability to relieve the symptoms commonly associated with menopause such as hot flashes, night sweats, and menstrual cramps. The speculated mechanism by which black cohosh achieves these therapeutic benefits is by diminishing the levels of a hormone that is produced in higher amounts during menopause. It is the increase of this hormone, called luteinizing hormone, which is postulated as one of the causes of hot flashes and other menstrual symptoms. Black cohosh is also noted for its ability to alleviate the symptoms of PMS. There is also some evidence to suggest it helps alleviate depression, and that it harbors anti-inflammatory properties; some people, therefore, use it to mitigate muscle pains and aches. Other benefits include treating coughs, due to its ability to clear out bodily mucus, and as a treatment for tinnitus, a condition in which the ears exhibit a chronic ringing.
