Calendula Flowers

Marigold or Calendula is an annual garden plant with an angular, branched, hairy stem 1 to 2 feet high. The leaves are alternate, sessile, spatulate or oblanceolate, dentate with widely spaced teeth, and hairy. From June to October the plant bears large, yellow or orange, terminal flower heads.

Properties/Uses - Anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, aperient, astringent, cholagogue, diaphoretic, hemostatic, healing, detoxifying, vulnerary. The flowers can be used for gastrointestinal problems, stomach cramps, colitis, diverticulitis, hepatitis, swollen glands, fungal infections, menstrual problems, pelvic inflammatory disease, and diarrhea. Marigold is also useful taken for fever, boils, abscesses, to prevent recurrent vomiting, bites/stings, sunburn, persistent sores, acne, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, sore nipples, vaginitis, and yeast infections. For external use, a very good salve for wounds can be made from the dried flowers or leaves, from the juice pressed out of the flowers, or from the tincture. The salve or dilute tincture is also good for bruises, sprains, pulled muscles, sores, and boils.
