Celery Seed

Celery Seed is the dried fruit of Apium graviolens, a biennial in the parsley family. This is the same genus and species used for growing table celery, although there are particular varieties that are used for the vegetable. The seeds are very small (about 1/16th of an inch), ovoid and light brown. Celery grows wild in salty soils of North and South America, Europe, and Africa. The fleshy, bulbous root sends up, in the second year, an angular, furrowed, branched stem from 1 to 3 feet high. Celery leaves are opposite, dark green, shiny, and pinnate, the leaflets wedge-shaped, incised, coarsely toothed. The white to gray-white flowers bloom in paniculate compound umbels from July to November

Properties/Uses - Carminative, sedative. A decoction of the seeds can be used for bronchitis, rheumatism, and as a sedative for nervousness. Celery Seeds find their main use in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis and gout. They are especially useful in rheumatoid arthritis where there is an associated mental depression. Their diuretic action is obviously involved in rheumatic conditions, but Celery Seeds are also used as a urinary antiseptic, largely because of the volatile oil apiol. The healing properties can prove useful in cases of bladder disorders, cystitis and kidney disorders. Celery also promotes the onset of menstruation, and can help soothe the nerves and relieve pain.
