Echinacea Purpura is a perennial, native to the North American plains, blooms second and successive seasons from tough, expanding clumps. The flowers are a rich purple and the florets are seated around a high cone; seeds, four-sided achenes. Root tapering, cylindrical, entire, slightly spiral, longitudinally furrowed; fracture short, fibrous; bark thin; wood, thick, in alternate porous, yellowish and black transverse wedges, and the rhizome has a circular pith. It has a faint aromatic smell, with a sweetish taste, leaving a tingling sensation in the mouth not unlike Aconitum napellus, but without its lasting numbing effect.

Properties/Uses - Echinacea is one of the premier herbs successfully used for infection. It actually fights infection in several ways, first it is an immune stimulant that helps the body defend itself against infection. Secondly, it acts like interferon, the body's own antiviral compound. It is generally successful when used on either viruses or bacteria. It is especially useful for infections of the upper respiratory tract such as laryngitis, tonsillitis and for congested sinus conditions. Echinacea was first used in Native American sweat lodges to help the participants endure extreme temperatures. It offers the body an overall feeling of well being, and for this reason studies of Echinacea continue today. Contributing to the bodies natural ability to fight infection, Echinacea is commonly referred to as the natural antibiotic and commonly used to fight infection caused by common colds and flu. It may also be used for reducing inflammation caused by respiratory problems, bronchitis, strep throat and enlarged prostate glands. Echinacea increases bodily resistance to infection and is used for boils, erysipelas, septicaemia, cancer, syphilis and other impurities of the blood, its action being antiseptic. It has useful properties as a an aphrodisiac.
