Ginseng American

American ginseng is a perennial plant which was at one time found wild in the rich, cool woodlands of eastern North America. Popular demand for the roots wiped out the wild supply, and ginseng is now found here only under cultivation (mainly in Wisconsin). American ginseng is similar in appearance to Asiatic ginseng, but its root is spindle-shaped or forked and its leaflets are oblong-obovate in shape and have coarsely serrate or dentate margins. The root is the part of the plant used for medicinal purposes. Wrinkles around the neck of the root tell how old the plant is. This is important because ginseng is not ready for use until it has grown for four to six years.

Properties/Uses - Analysis shows that American ginseng and Asiatic ginseng have essentially the same constituents. Demulcent, panacea, stimulant, stomachic. The North American Indians used ginseng predominately to combat fatigue, stimulate appetite and aid in digestion, though some tribes mixed it into love potions. In Western medicine, it is considered a mild stomachic tonic and stimulant, useful in loss of appetite and in digestive affections that arise from mental and nervous exhaustion. It may be beneficial for brain, head, and blood vessels, blood sugar, histamine levels, inflammation, stress, mental and physical abilities, impotency, anemia, hardened arteries, depression, diabetes, ulcers, edema, immune and lung function, appetite, libido, protection against radiation exposure, and easement from cocaine withdrawal. American ginseng has been used for stress and fatigue characterized by insomnia, poor appetite, nervousness, and restlessness. The root has been used for conditions of weakness, convalescence, low resistance, poor immunity or debility due to chronic disease. Scientific support is now emerging for its use in the regulation of various metabolic disturbances including blood sugar and lipid levels.
