Ginseng White

Panax (Ginseng) is a perennial plant indigenous to the mountainous forests of the northern temperate zone of Eastern Asia and is cultivated in China, Korea and Japan. It has a thick, spindle- like brown-yellow root, often divided at the end. The simple glabrous stem bears a whorl of three or five palmately compound leaves consisting of five oblong-ovate, finely double-serrate leaflets. From June to August it is topped with a single umbel of greenish-yellow flowers. The fruit is a small edible drupe-like pale red berry. The activity of young cultivated roots is said to be up to half that of old roots grown in the wild.

Properties/Uses - An excellent energizer. Men and women, worldwide, use Ginseng to support stamina and vitality. Combats the physical effects of stress. Boosts vitality and enhances immunity. Chinese ginseng may treat impotence and infertility in men. Panax ginseng – also called Asian, Chinese or Korean ginseng – has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years to enhance both longevity and the quality of life; it is the most widely available and extensively studied form of the herb. Another species, Panax quinquefolius, or American ginseng, is grown mainly in the American Midwest and exported to China. Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) comes from Siberia, and is distantly related to the other two. The medicinal part of the plant is its slow-growing root, which is harvested after four to six years, when its overall ginsenoside content – the main active ingredient in Panax ginsengs – is at its peak; there are 13 different ginsenosides in all. Panax ginsengs also contains panaxans, substances that can lower blood sugar, and polysaccharides, complex sugar molecules that enhance the immune system. 'White' ginseng is simply the dried root; 'red' ginseng (usually from Korea) has been steamed and dried. Most research studies have been done with white Chinese ginseng. Siberian ginseng is characterised by containing eleutherosides, which have similar properties to ginsenosides
