Hawthorn Leaf

The hawthorn grows as either a shrub or a tree in England and continental Europe; in England it is widely grown as a hedge plant. Its trunk or stems have hard wood, smooth and ash-gray bark, and thorny branches. The small shiny leaves are dark green on top, light bluish-green underneath, and have three irregularly toothed lobes. The white flowers have round petals and grow in terminal corymbs during May and June. The fruit, or haw, is a 2- to 3-seeded, fleshy pome, scarlet on the outside, yellowish and pulpy on the inside.

Properties/Uses - Hawthorne is one of the most valuable herbs for the heart and circulation. Used for organic and functional heart troubles. The berries reduce high blood pressure caused by hardening of the arteries and kidney disease, while the flowers are used for the "aging" heart and for those with heart-valve disease. This herb has the ability to both lower high blood pressure and to bring low blood pressure back to normal. Other indications include: angina, irregular heartbeat, spasm of the arteries, and insomnia with a nervous origin. The Chinese use the berries as a digestive aid, and the French use them to treat dyspepsia and diarrhea. Both ancient and modern herbalists have successfully used hawthorn for its food and health benefits. Modern science shows that hawthorne contains chemical components which are sedative, anti-spasmodic and diuretic.
