Oregano

Oregano is a perennial plant that grows wild in the Mediterranean region and in Asia and is cultivated in the U.S. Its creeping rootstock produces a square, downy, purplish stem with opposite, ovate leaves that are dotted with small depressions. Purple, two-lipped flowers grow in terminal clusters from July to October.

Properties/Uses - Antispasmodic, calmative, carminative, diaphoretic, expectorant, stomachic, tonic. An infusion of the herb has beneficial effects on upset stomach and indigestion, headache, colic, and nervous complaints, as well as on coughs, whooping cough, and other respiratory ailments. It also helps to relieve abdominal cramps in women and will regulate the menstrual cycle when taken three or four days before the regular time. The tea makes a calming and tonic bath additive. It can be made into a sleep pillow that may be helpful for insomnia.
